EULERCALC

GPA Calculator (4.0 Scale)

This GPA calculator works out your grade point average on the standard US 4.0 scale in seconds. Add one row for every course you have taken, choose the letter grade you earned — A, B, C, D or F — and enter how many credit hours the course is worth. As soon as you type, the calculator converts each letter grade into grade points, weights it by the number of credits and shows your overall GPA together with the total credits counted. It is perfect for high-school and college students who want to check a semester GPA, track their cumulative average across several terms, or estimate the grades they still need. Nothing is stored and you can add or remove courses freely.

Grade Credits

US 4.0 scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. Each grade is weighted by its credits.

How it works

Your GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points, not a simple average of letters. Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0. For every course, the calculator multiplies its grade points by its credit hours, adds all those quality points together, and divides by the total number of credits: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). For example, an A (4) in a 3-credit class and a B (3) in a 4-credit class give (4×3 + 3×4) ÷ (3 + 4) = (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 24 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43. Because heavier courses carry more weight, a strong grade in a high-credit class lifts your GPA more than the same grade in a small one.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA puts every course on the same 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty, so an A is always 4 points. A weighted GPA gives extra points to harder classes such as Honors or AP/IB — an A there may count as 4.5 or 5.0 — so it can exceed 4.0. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale but weights each grade by its credit hours, which is how colleges compute a credit-based average.
How does the 4.0 scale work?
On the US 4.0 scale each letter grade is worth a fixed number of grade points: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0. Some schools add pluses and minuses (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.), but the four-point whole-number scale is the most common baseline and the one used here.
How can I raise my GPA?
Because GPA is credit-weighted, earning strong grades in high-credit courses moves it the most. Retaking a class where you got a low grade, prioritizing your heaviest courses, and adding new courses with high grades all pull the average up. Since past credits stay in the denominator, raising a cumulative GPA gets harder the more credits you have already completed.
What are credit hours?
Credit hours (or credits) measure how much a course counts toward your degree, usually based on class time per week. A typical lecture is 3 credits and a lab might be 1. In the GPA formula, credits are the weight: a grade in a 4-credit course influences your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
Can I calculate a cumulative GPA across semesters?
Yes. Just add one row for every course from every semester you want to include, each with its grade and credit hours. The calculator sums the quality points and credits across all of them and divides, giving a single cumulative GPA over all the courses you entered.
