How it works
The three quantities are tied together by a single formula: speed equals distance divided by time, v = d / t. Rearranging it gives the other two forms. To find distance, multiply speed by time: d = v × t. To find time, divide distance by speed: t = d / v. For example, a car covering 120 km in 2 hours travels at 120 / 2 = 60 km/h; at that same 60 km/h it would cover 60 × 3 = 180 km in three hours, and it would need 300 / 60 = 5 hours to travel 300 km. Keeping the units consistent — kilometres, hours and km/h — is what makes the three formulas interchangeable.
The three rearranged formulas
Starting from v = d / t you can solve for the other two. For speed: a car covering 240 km in 3 hours goes 240 / 3 = 80 km/h. For distance (d = v × t): at 80 km/h for 2.5 hours it covers 80 × 2.5 = 200 km. For time (t = d / v): covering 300 km at 100 km/h takes 300 / 100 = 3 hours. With any two values you always get the third.
Converting speed units
Switching between km/h, m/s and mph is common in physics and sport. To go from km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6; to go to mph, divide by 1.609. These equivalences are a handy quick reference:
