How it works
The conversion is built in stages. The first year of life equals about 15 human years — that's how fast puppies and kittens mature. The second year adds roughly 9 more human years, reaching about 24 by age 2. From then on, each additional year adds about 5 human years for dogs and about 4 for cats, since cats tend to live a little longer. For example, a 3-year-old dog is about 29 human years old, while a 3-year-old cat is about 28.
Dog age equivalence by size
The size of the breed changes the equivalence quite a bit after the first couple of years: small dogs live longer and age more slowly, while large and giant breeds age faster. That is exactly why the old "multiply by 7" rule fails in both directions. This table uses the American Kennel Club reference values for small (up to 9 kg), medium (10-22 kg) and large dogs (over 23 kg).

What about cats? How their years add up
Cats follow a similar curve but age a little more slowly after age two. A cat's first year of life equals about 15 human years and the second reaches about 24. From then on, roughly 4 human years are added for each cat year: a 5-year-old cat is around 36 human years, an 8-year-old about 48 and a 10-year-old about 56. That is why a young cat of 3 or 4 is, in human terms, a fully mature adult between 28 and 32 years old.
