How it works
Your sun sign is decided by where the Sun sat along the ecliptic on the day you were born, which the tropical zodiac splits into twelve equal 30-degree segments. Each segment maps to a roughly month-long range of calendar dates: Aries runs from about 21 March to 19 April, Taurus from 20 April to 20 May, and so on around the wheel to Pisces, which ends on 20 March. The calculator compares your birth date against these ranges and returns the matching sign. Because the Sun does not cross into a new sign at the same clock moment every year, the boundary dates can slide by a day; people born right on a cusp should treat the result as a very close guide.

- What if I was born on the day two signs change (a cusp)?
- A "cusp" is a birthday that falls on or near the boundary between two signs. Because the Sun enters a new sign at a specific hour that shifts slightly each year, someone born on, say, 20 April could be a late Aries or an early Taurus depending on the exact year and time of birth. If your birthday sits on a boundary date, treat this calculator as a very close guide and check a precise ephemeris or birth chart for your birth year to be certain.
- What is the difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiac?
- The tropical zodiac, used in most Western astrology, ties the signs to the seasons and starts Aries at the spring equinox. The sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic (Indian) astrology, aligns the signs with the actual background constellations. Because of a slow wobble of Earth's axis called precession, the two systems have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees, so your sidereal sign is often the one before your tropical sign. This calculator uses the tropical system.

- Approximately: Aries 21 Mar–19 Apr, Taurus 20 Apr–20 May, Gemini 21 May–20 Jun, Cancer 21 Jun–22 Jul, Leo 23 Jul–22 Aug, Virgo 23 Aug–22 Sep, Libra 23 Sep–22 Oct, Scorpio 23 Oct–21 Nov, Sagittarius 22 Nov–21 Dec, Capricorn 22 Dec–19 Jan, Aquarius 20 Jan–18 Feb, and Pisces 19 Feb–20 Mar. These boundaries can shift by a day from year to year.
- Do I need my exact time of birth to find my sun sign?
- No. Your sun sign depends only on the calendar date of your birth, so the day, month and year are enough — that is all this calculator asks for. Your birth time and place only matter for other parts of a chart, such as your rising sign (ascendant) and the position of the Moon and planets in the houses.
- Why do some sources list slightly different zodiac dates?
- Because the Sun does not cross into each sign at exactly the same moment every year, different publications round the boundaries in different ways — some fix a single "average" date, others adjust year by year. That is why you may see Leo starting on 22 or 23 July, for example. The differences only ever affect people born within a day of a boundary.
