Consumption (kWh)

Consumption is calculated as power (kW) × hours per day × days, and the cost multiplies that consumption by the price per kWh. This is an estimate: it does not include taxes, fixed charges, or variations in the appliance's real power draw.

How it works

The calculator first converts the appliance's power from watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, because electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours. It then multiplies that power in kW by the hours of use per day and by the number of days to get the total energy consumption in kWh: kWh = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day × days. Finally, it multiplies the consumption by your price per kWh to obtain the total cost. For example, a 100-watt device used 5 hours a day for 30 days consumes 0.1 kW × 5 × 30 = 15 kWh, and at a price of 0.15 per kWh it costs 15 × 0.15 = 2.25.

How do I calculate the electricity cost of an appliance?
Take the appliance's power in watts, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatts, then multiply by the hours you use it per day and by the number of days. That gives the consumption in kWh. Multiply the kWh by your price per kWh to get the cost. This calculator does all of that for you automatically as you type.
Where do I find the wattage of my appliance?
The power in watts (W) is usually printed on a label on the back or bottom of the device, on the power supply, or in the user manual. Some appliances list amps (A) and volts (V) instead; in that case, watts = amps × volts. Typical values are around 10 W for an LED bulb, 60 W for a laptop, 150 W for a fridge, and 1,000 to 2,000 W for a heater or air conditioner.
What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh)?
A kilowatt-hour is the unit electricity companies use to bill you. It represents the energy used by a 1,000-watt device running for one hour. For example, a 2,000-watt heater running for half an hour uses 1 kWh, and a 100-watt bulb running for 10 hours also uses 1 kWh. Your bill charges a certain price for each kWh consumed.
Does this include taxes and fixed charges?
No. The calculator gives you the pure energy cost: consumption multiplied by the price per kWh. Real electricity bills often add fixed service charges, taxes, and sometimes tiered rates that change the price as you consume more. Use this result as a close estimate of the variable energy cost, not the exact total on your bill.
How can I use it to compare appliances?
Enter the same hours and days for two devices and just change the wattage and, if needed, the price. The one with the higher kWh and cost is the more expensive to run. This is a quick way to see, for instance, how much you would save by replacing an old incandescent bulb with an LED, or an old fridge with an efficient model.
