How it works
The calculator first works out the liters of fuel required by multiplying the distance by the consumption and dividing by 100: liters = distance × consumption / 100. This is because consumption is expressed per 100 kilometers, so a car that uses 8 l/100km burns 8 liters every hundred kilometers. It then multiplies those liters by the price per liter to get the total cost: cost = liters × price. For example, a 500 km trip in a car that consumes 8 l/100km needs 40 liters, and at 1.50 per liter the trip costs 60. Change any input and both figures update immediately, so you can test different distances, cars, or fuel prices in seconds.

Splitting the cost between passengers
Sharing the car is the simplest way to make a trip cheaper: fuel costs the same whether the car is full or empty, so every extra passenger lowers the spend for everyone. A one-way 500 km trip costs about 60; there and back (1,000 km), about 120. Split between four people, each pays just 30 for both legs. - First you work out the liters used with liters = distance × consumption / 100, then you multiply by the price per liter: cost = liters × price. For a 500 km trip at 8 l/100km, that is 40 liters, and at 1.50 per liter the total is 60.
- What does l/100km mean?
- Liters per 100 kilometers is the amount of fuel a vehicle burns to travel 100 km. A lower number means a more efficient car: 5 l/100km uses less fuel than 8 l/100km over the same distance. You can usually find your car's figure in the manual or on the trip computer.
- How do I convert miles per gallon (mpg) to l/100km?
- Divide 235.21 by the mpg value to get l/100km. For example, 30 mpg is about 235.21 / 30 ≈ 7.8 l/100km. Enter that converted figure in the consumption field so the estimate matches your car.
- Does this include the return trip?
- No, the calculator estimates a one-way trip. If you are driving there and back, enter the round-trip distance, or simply double the result to cover both legs of the journey.
- Why is my real fuel use different from the estimate?
- Actual consumption depends on speed, traffic, hills, air conditioning, tire pressure, load, and driving style. The official l/100km figure is measured under ideal conditions, so real-world trips often use a little more. Use your own recent average for the most accurate estimate.
