How it works
The tip is calculated as the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage divided by one hundred: tip = bill × (percent / 100). The total is simply the bill plus that tip, and the amount per person is the total divided by the number of people sharing the meal. For example, on a bill of 100 with a 15% tip split between 2 people, the tip is 15, the total is 115, and each person pays 57.50. Adjust the percentage to match local custom or the quality of service, and change the number of people to split the check evenly.

Tipping customs by region
How much to tip depends a lot on where you are. In the United States and Canada tipping is practically mandatory and runs from 15% to 20%. Across much of Europe a 5% to 10% tip or simply rounding up is usually enough, and service is often already included. In Latin America around 10% is customary. In countries such as Japan tipping is not the custom and can even feel awkward. The figures in the table are indicative: it is always worth checking whether the bill already includes service.

- Do all countries expect tips?

- What if a service charge is already included?
- If the bill already lists a service charge or says the tip is included, you generally do not need to add more, though rounding up or leaving a small extra for great service is always welcome. Check the bottom of the receipt for wording like "service included" before tipping again.
