Candle Wax Calculator
This candle wax calculator estimates how much wax you need to fill a batch of containers, so you buy the right amount and waste less. Wax is sold by weight but fills a jar by volume, and the two are linked by the wax's density — how many grams sit in each millilitre. Wax densities are approximate: soy ~0.90 g/ml, paraffin ~0.90 g/ml, beeswax ~0.96 g/ml and coconut ~0.92 g/ml. The actual fill varies with the container shape and the fragrance you add, which also takes up space. Treat the result as an estimate and fine-tune with a test pour.

How it works
The core formula is simple: wax per container (in grams) = container volume (in ml) × wax density (g/ml) × fill percentage ÷ 100. The calculator runs this for one jar, then multiplies by the number of containers to give the batch total. Density is what turns volume into weight, and it depends on the wax: soy and paraffin sit near 0.90 g/ml, coconut around 0.92, and beeswax about 0.96, so the same jar needs a little more beeswax than soy. The fill percentage defaults to 90%, a common choice that leaves headroom below the rim and rough room for the fragrance load. To find a jar's volume without a spec sheet, fill it with water and weigh the water: one gram of water is one millilitre, so the weight in grams is the volume in millilitres.

- How do I know how much wax I need?
- Multiply the volume of one container by the wax density and by your fill fraction to get the wax weight for a single jar, then multiply by the number of jars. - Why use density if wax is sold by weight?
- Because your container is measured by volume, not weight. A jar holds a certain number of millilitres, but a supplier sells wax in grams or ounces. Density is the bridge between the two — how many grams fill one millilitre — so it lets you translate the space you need to fill into the amount of wax you have to buy.
- What fill percentage should I use?
- Around 90% is a common starting point. You should not pour to the very top: candles need headroom below the rim for safety and a clean look, and the fragrance oil you add takes up some of the space too. Lower the percentage for tall jars or heavy fragrance loads, and adjust after a test pour.
- How do I measure my container's volume?
