How it works
Your final grade is a weighted average: your current grade counts for the part of the course already done and the final exam counts for its weight. If w is the final's weight as a fraction, the score you need is (desired − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. For example, with a current grade of 70, a final worth 40% and a desired grade of 80, you need (80 − 70 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 95 on the final. The formula comes from the weighted average final = current × (1 − w) + exam × w: you subtract what your current grade already contributes and divide by the exam's weight to isolate the score you must earn. Another case on a 0–10 scale: if you currently have a 4, the final is worth 40% and you want to pass with a 5, you need (5 − 4 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 6.5. If the number comes out above the maximum grade, the target is no longer reachable; if it is negative, you have already passed no matter what happens on the exam.

These examples assume you want to pass with a 5 on a 0–10 scale and show how the score you need shifts with the grade you already carry and how much the exam is worth. A result above 10 means it is no longer possible; a negative one means you have passed without even sitting the exam.

- How do I calculate the grade I need on the final?
- Enter your current grade, how much the final exam is worth as a percentage, and the final grade you want. The calculator applies the formula (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight and shows the exact score you need to earn on the final.
- What does "final exam weight" mean?
- It is the percentage of your overall course grade that the final exam is worth. If the final counts for 40% of your mark, everything else you have done so far counts for the remaining 60%, which is what "current grade" represents.
- What if the required grade is higher than the maximum?
- If the result comes out above the highest grade the exam allows, it means it is no longer mathematically possible to reach your desired grade, even with a perfect final. You would need to aim for a lower target.
- What does a negative result mean?
- A negative required grade means you have already secured your desired grade with your current mark, and you would reach it even if you scored zero on the final. You have more margin than you need.
- What if the final is worth 0%?
- If the weight is 0%, the final does not affect your grade at all, so the calculator simply shows your desired grade as the "needed" value — there is nothing the exam can change.
- Does it work with any grading scale?
- Yes. The formula does not depend on the scale: you can use 0–10, 0–100 or points, as long as the current grade, the desired grade and the result are all on the same scale. Only the final's weight is a percentage. If your school uses 0–100 and you want a 60 while carrying 50 with a final worth 40%, you need (60 − 50 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 75.
- How do I get my "current grade" if I have several assignments and midterms?
- Your current grade is the weighted average of everything graded so far, taken together as a single mark that covers the portion left to the final. Add each score multiplied by its relative weight within that part and use that number as the "current grade", so the final stays the only unknown.
