Running Pace Calculator

This running pace calculator turns the distance you covered and the total time it took into a clear, usable pace. Enter how many kilometres you ran and how many minutes you spent running, and it instantly shows your pace in minutes and seconds per kilometre, the equivalent pace per mile, and your average speed in kilometres per hour. Pace is the single most useful number in distance running: it tells you how fast you are moving in a way that transfers directly to race planning, interval targets, and everyday training. Whether you are preparing for your first 5K or fine-tuning marathon splits, knowing your pace helps you run even, avoid going out too fast, and hit your goal time.

Pace (min/km)

Pace (min/mile)

Speed (km/h)

Pace is obtained by dividing the total time by the distance. It is expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometre (and per mile), while speed is shown in kilometres per hour.

How it works

The calculator divides the total time by the distance to get your pace per kilometre: pace = time ÷ distance. That decimal number of minutes is then converted into the familiar minutes-and-seconds format, so 5.5 minutes per kilometre becomes 5:30 min/km. To get pace per mile it multiplies the per-kilometre pace by 1.609344, the number of kilometres in a mile, because a mile is longer than a kilometre and therefore takes more time to cover. Speed is the inverse relationship: it divides the distance by the time expressed in hours, so 10 km in 50 minutes (50/60 of an hour) gives 12 km/h. All three figures describe the same run from different angles, letting you compare efforts measured in different units.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is running pace?
Running pace is how long it takes you to cover one unit of distance, usually expressed as minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile. A pace of 5:00 min/km means you run each kilometre in five minutes. Unlike speed, which tells you distance per unit of time, pace tells you time per unit of distance, which is more intuitive for pacing a race and reading splits on a watch.
What is a good pace for a 5K?
It depends heavily on your experience. Many recreational runners finish a 5K at around 6:00 to 7:00 min/km, which is roughly 30 to 35 minutes. Faster club runners go well under 5:00 min/km, and elite times require paces under 3:00 min/km. The best benchmark is your own recent efforts: aim to improve gradually rather than compare yourself to others.
What pace do I need to run a marathon in a specific time?
Divide your goal time by 42.195 km to get the required pace per kilometre. For a 4-hour marathon that is 240 minutes ÷ 42.195 ≈ 5:41 min/km; for a 3:30 marathon it is 210 ÷ 42.195 ≈ 4:59 min/km. Enter the full distance and your target time in this calculator to see the exact pace you need to hold.
How do I convert pace between km and miles?
A mile is 1.609344 kilometres, so to convert pace per kilometre to pace per mile you multiply by 1.609344, and to go the other way you divide. For example, 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 min/mile. This calculator shows both automatically, so you never have to do the conversion by hand.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace and speed describe the same effort in opposite directions. Pace is time per distance (minutes per kilometre), while speed is distance per time (kilometres per hour). A pace of 5:00 min/km equals a speed of 12 km/h. Runners usually think in pace because it maps directly to race splits, whereas cyclists and treadmills often use speed.
