How it works

Every reading is routed through the pascal, so one figure can hop between a tire gauge, a weather report and a dive computer. Say the sticker in your driver's door asks for 32 psi but your gauge reads in bar: the tool turns the psi into pascals (32 × 6894.76 = 220,632 Pa) and divides by the bar factor (÷ 100000 = 2.21 bar). It works in reverse for a European manual that lists 2.5 bar when your pump only shows psi (2.5 × 100000 ÷ 6894.76 = 36.3 psi). Because the factors are fixed — 1 bar = 100000 Pa, 1 psi = 6894.76 Pa, 1 atm = 101325 Pa, 1 kPa = 1000 Pa, 1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa — the same inflation target reads the same whatever unit your gauge speaks.

Common tire pressures across units

Car door stickers and manuals quote inflation pressure in psi, bar or kPa depending on where the car was sold. This table covers the range most passenger cars use, so you can match your gauge to the recommended figure whatever unit it is written in. The atm column shows how each value compares with average air pressure at sea level.

1 bar equals about 14.5 psi. Since 1 bar is 100000 Pa and 1 psi is 6894.76 Pa, dividing 100000 by 6894.76 gives 14.5038 psi.
How many pascals are in 1 atmosphere?
1 standard atmosphere (atm) equals exactly 101325 pascals, which is about 1.01325 bar or roughly 14.696 psi. It represents average air pressure at sea level.
What is mmHg used for?
Millimeters of mercury (mmHg) is common in medicine for blood pressure and in weather for barometric pressure. 1 mmHg is 133.322 Pa, so normal blood pressure of 120 mmHg is about 16.0 kPa.
How do I convert psi to kPa?
Multiply psi by 6.89476. For example, 30 psi × 6.89476 = 206.8 kPa. This converter does it automatically using the pascal as the common base.
How many bar is a typical car tire?
Most car tires run around 2.2 to 2.5 bar, which equals about 32 to 36 psi or roughly 220 to 250 kPa. Always check the value on the door jamb or manual.
The manual says 32 psi — how much is that in bar?
32 psi equals 2.21 bar (32 × 6894.76 ÷ 100000) or 220.6 kPa. That is a typical passenger-car figure; if the manual gives a range like 32–35 psi, that is 2.21 to 2.41 bar.
Does tire pressure rise when the tires get hot?
Yes. Pressure climbs by roughly 0.07 bar (about 1 psi) for every 10 °C of temperature. That is why you should measure cold: a tire checked right after driving can read 0.2–0.3 bar high and tempt you into deflating it below the recommended value.
