Length Converter

This length converter turns any distance measurement into another unit instantly, moving freely between the metric system (kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters) and imperial units (miles, yards, feet, inches). Note the distance, point to the starting unit and the target one, and the equivalence resolves in a tap, whether you need how many km the miles of a trip are or to turn the feet and inches of a plan into centimetres.

How it works

Every unit is defined by how many metres it represents, and every conversion crosses through the metre as a bridge. Think of a marathon: the official distance is 26.219 miles, an awkward number for anyone who thinks in kilometres. The calculator multiplies those miles by 1609.344 (the metres in one mile), gets 42,195 m and divides by 1000 to return the race's 42.195 km. The same bridge handles a road trip: 300 miles of US highway are 300 × 1609.344 = 482,803 m, that is 482.8 km. Always converting to metres first and then dividing by the target factor keeps every result exact, whatever pair of units you combine.

Preguntas frecuentes

How many kilometers are in a mile?
1 mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers, usually rounded to 1.609 km. Going the other way, 1 kilometer is about 0.621 miles. So a 10 km run is roughly 6.21 miles.
How many centimeters are in a foot?
1 foot equals 30.48 centimeters, and 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters. Since a foot has 12 inches, that is 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm.
How do I convert meters to feet?
Multiply the number of meters by 3.28084. For example, 2 m × 3.28084 = 6.5617 ft. To go from feet back to meters, multiply by 0.3048 instead.
What is the difference between the metric and imperial systems?
The metric system (meters, centimeters, kilometers) is decimal, so units scale by powers of ten. The imperial system (inches, feet, yards, miles) uses fixed ratios like 12 inches per foot and 5280 feet per mile. This converter handles both and switches between them for you.
How many inches are in a meter?
One meter is about 39.37 inches. Because 1 inch is exactly 0.0254 m, dividing 1 by 0.0254 gives 39.3701 inches.
How many km is 5 miles?
5 miles is 8.047 km, since each mile equals 1.609344 km (5 × 1.609344 = 8.04672). It is a common distance in fun runs: 3 miles is 4.828 km and 10 miles is 16.093 km.
Why does the US still use miles instead of kilometres?
The United States never completed the switch to the metric system that almost the whole world adopted. Although science and the military work in metric units, road signs, maps and everyday life stay in miles, feet and inches. Along with Liberia and Myanmar, it is one of the few countries that keeps the imperial system in daily use.
