Area Converter

This area converter changes any surface between the units used in real estate, farming, construction and geography: square metres (m²), square feet (ft²), square kilometres (km²), hectares (ha), square centimetres (cm²), acres (ac) and square yards (yd²). Enter a value, choose the source and target units, and the result updates instantly. It is ideal for comparing a property listing given in acres with one in hectares, sizing a floor plan in ft² and m², or working out the area of land, a room or a plot in whatever unit you need.

How it works

Each unit is defined by how many square metres it equals, and every conversion pivots through the m²: multiply by the source factor to reach square metres, then divide by the target factor. A real case: a US listing shows an apartment of 850 ft². Since 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², you work out 850 × 0.09290304 = 79 m², enough to see it is a small two-bedroom. Land goes the other way: a 5-hectare plot is 5 × 10,000 = 50,000 m², or 50,000 ÷ 4,046.8564 = 12.36 acres to compare it with a listing quoted in acres. Because area factors are the square of the length factors (1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²), the numbers grow fast: 1 m² is 10.76 ft², not 3.28.

Common area conversions at a glance

From a single room to a whole farm, these are the sizes people look up most. The table pairs square metres with their exact square-foot equivalent (m² × 10.7639) and, on the larger rows, the hectare, acre or km² they match — handy for reading a floor plan or a land listing:

Preguntas frecuentes

How many square metres are in a hectare?
One hectare equals exactly 10,000 m², the area of a square 100 m on each side. It is the standard unit for farmland and large plots in most of the world.
How many square metres is an acre?
One acre is about 4,047 m² (4,046.8564 m² exactly), roughly 0.405 hectares. So one hectare is about 2.47 acres.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply the square feet by 0.0929. So 1,000 ft² is about 92.9 m². To go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.7639.
How big is a square kilometre?
One km² equals 1,000,000 m², or 100 hectares. It is about 247 acres, and is commonly used for cities, regions and land cover on maps.
Why are area factors different from length factors?
Area is a length squared, so each conversion factor is the length factor squared. For example, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, but 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². That is why 1 m² is about 10.76 ft², not 3.28.
How many square feet is a 60 m² apartment?
Multiply by 10.7639: 60 × 10.7639 = 645.8 ft². So a flat listed as 60 m² is roughly 646 ft², a common one-bedroom size in US and UK listings.
How many hectares is a football pitch?
A standard pitch of about 105 × 68 m covers 7,140 m², which is 0.714 hectares (about 1.76 acres). So it takes roughly 1.4 pitches to fill one hectare.
