Volume Converter

This volume converter switches a measurement between the units used in cooking, science and everyday life: liters, US gallons, milliliters, cubic meters, quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces. Type a value, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, and the result appears instantly. Use the swap button to reverse the direction. All US customary units here (gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce) use the US liquid definition, so a gallon means the US gallon of 3.785 liters, not the larger imperial one.

How it works

Every unit carries a factor for how many liters it equals, and every conversion pivots on the liter: multiply by the source factor to reach liters, then divide by the target factor. At the pump: a US dispenser reads 12 gallons; since 1 US gallon = 3.785412 liters, you filled 12 × 3.785412 = 45.4 liters. In the kitchen the jump is smaller: a recipe calls for 2 cups of milk and your jug is marked in milliliters, so 2 × 236.588 = 473 mL. Watch out for the imperial (UK) gallon of 4.546 L — here every US unit (gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce) is the American one, which is why a gallon is 3.785 L, not 4.546.

Everyday volume conversions

From a measuring cup to a full fuel tank, these are the amounts people convert most. The table lines up liters with US gallons (L ÷ 3.785412) and notes the cup or milliliter reference where it helps in the kitchen or at the pump:

Preguntas frecuentes

Which gallon does this converter use?
It uses the US liquid gallon, equal to 3.785412 liters. If you need the imperial (UK) gallon of about 4.546 liters, this tool is not the right one for that figure, since the quart, pint, cup and fluid ounce here are also the US customary versions.
How many liters are in a US gallon?
One US gallon equals about 3.785 liters. So 5 gallons is roughly 18.93 liters, and to go the other way you divide liters by 3.785412 to get gallons.
How many liters are in a cubic meter?
A cubic meter holds exactly 1000 liters, because a cube one meter on each side contains 1000 cubic decimeters and each cubic decimeter is one liter. That makes the cubic meter the largest unit in this converter.
How many milliliters are in a liter?
There are 1000 milliliters in a liter, so 1 mL is one-thousandth of a liter. A standard 500 mL water bottle is therefore half a liter.
What is a cup in this tool?
It is the US customary cup of about 236.6 milliliters, common in American recipes. Note that a metric cup (250 mL) and a UK cup differ slightly, so results may vary a little from recipes written in those systems.
How many liters is 15 gallons of fuel?
At the pump, 15 US gallons × 3.785412 = 56.78 liters. So a US fill-up quoted as 15 gallons is close to 57 liters, useful when your car and prices are in liters.
How many milliliters are 2 cups in a recipe?
Using the US cup, 2 × 236.588 = 473.2 mL, just under half a liter. So 2 cups of milk or water is about 473 mL when your measuring jug is metric.
