How it works
The scales are tied together by linear formulas. Celsius to Fahrenheit multiplies by 9/5 and adds 32 (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32); the reverse subtracts 32 first and then multiplies by 5/9 (°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9). Kelvin keeps the size of the Celsius degree but starts at absolute zero, so K = °C + 273.15. A everyday case: an American recipe tells you to bake at 350 °F but your oven dial is in Celsius. Work out (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 176.7 °C and set it to 175 °C. The converter always pivots through Celsius as a common base before applying the target formula, which is why a fever of 38 °C shows up as 100.4 °F without you doing the arithmetic.
